Sharing the Wealth

2014-15-SKI-&-RIDE-1Since 1957, thousands of skiers in the Midwest have been taking advantage of the opportunities that the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council offers to our member ski clubs. CMSC serves its member clubs by promoting, supporting and developing activities, camaraderie and a shared interest in the sport of downhill skiing and snowboarding. CMSC has financially supported Olympic hopefuls to reach their personal goals. The Council also has provided financial assistance to the American Blind Ski Foundation and the Southeastern Wisconsin Adaptive Ski Program, SEWASP.

I could go on and on about everything that CMSC offers, but the real questions that I have been considering are “How do we share the wealth?” and “How do we inform clubs that are not members of CMSC about all of the opportunities that they are missing?” We have so much to share, but first we have to let others know that we exist.

Where are these clubs and how do we find them? We could start with the Windy City Ski and Snowboard Show that invites the public every year in October. Here, thousands of people interested in the sport of skiing and snowboarding attend to learn about ski areas in various parts of the United States as well as abroad. Along these lines there is the Travel and Adventure Show that takes place in January each year.

Therefore, let’s market CMSC to individuals who are already aficionados of the sport. Perhaps they ski with a group of friends that could form a club and join CMSC….just a thought. We can educate the public who may already belong to ski and board clubs that are not yet CMSC members. Let’s educate them about the added benefits of CMSC. How do we market the Council at these shows? Ski & Ride Club Guide, the magazine of the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council, is distributed to all who enter these two shows. Many individuals who attend are not aware that ski and board clubs exist close to their communities.

How do we convince non-member clubs that it would benefit them to belong to our organization? Here’s where we can brag. The benefits of club membership in CMSC fall under the following categories. Recreation – Alpine racing, Western and European trips, summer picnic at Norge Ski Hill with a ski jumping exposition. Club Planning and Education – Educational workshops at the Trip Seminar, our industry trade show. Marketing – Our website at that provides web presence to clubs, Ski & Ride Club Guide and individual club tri-folds at our ski shows and retail locations. Industry Lobbying – Coordinates efforts to lobby industry changes that adversely impact ski and snowboard clubs such as airline baggage policy.

So are you convinced? Would your club or group of friends like to join us? If you would like more information please call me, Ray Piwowarczyk, at 708-927-0330, and I will be happy to help you enhance your skiing or boarding experience.
